Helicopter Emergency Medical Service

Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) in partnership with Air Ambulance Northern Ireland (AANI), provide the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) for the region.

NIAS has responsibility for all aspects of clinical governance including the provision of the Paramedics and Consultants. NIAS ensure the most appropriate medical equipment and medicines are available for use. NIAS provide the airdesk and all dispatch facilities in the Emergency Operations Control (EOC) room. The airdesk is an integral part of EOC.

AANI has responsibility for all the aviation aspects of HEMS, including the provision of the aircraft, pilots, engineer, and airbase facilities. AANI’s operational helicopter carries the HEMS crew compiling of a pilot, doctor, and APCC, 365 days of the year, currently operating for twelve hours. The AW109 helicopter can get anywhere in the province in approximately twenty-five minutes.
