World Patient Safety Day 2025

17th September 2025

World Patient Safety Day is a special day of celebration that is set aside by the World Health Organisation (WHO) every year in September to highlighting important messages and issues from across the globe in relation to patient safety.

The theme for this year, the 17th of September 2025,  is ‘ensuring consistently safe care for every newborn and child, with a special focus on those from birth to nine years old. This year’s slogan, “Patient safety from the start!”, emphasizes the urgent need to act early and to prevent harm throughout childhood, and yield benefits across the life course’.

As the Director responsible for Quality, Safety and Improvement within NIAS, on this World Patient Safety Day, I would like to acknowledge the vital role of the ambulance service and of our staff in the delivery of responsive, safe, effective and compassionate care to our patients from the very first moments of life.

We are immensely proud of the work that we do and of the care that our service and staff deliver at this most vulnerable time of life. We hope that our staff can take a moment today to pause and to reflect of on the contribution that they personally make and that our services bring to the lives of those in our communities in relation to patient safety.

You will see a number of events occurring throughout today and we hope that you will be able to join in to some.

We know that for some of our staff delivering frontline service that this may not be possible so we will be sharing updates with you through through our various platforms.

Some events happening on this World Patient Safety Day, 2025, include:

  • Our Community Resuscitation team are out on the road visiting primary school children to share safety messages and promote early life saving skills.
  •  We will be sharing information and resources for parents, caregivers and children in relation to promoting education, awareness and active participation in their care through our social media channels
  •  We will be sharing bite-size maternity learning and updates for our NIAS staff,  focusing on strengthening knowledge and confidence to respond safely to maternity related emergencies by our clinical team.
  • We will be launching our new NIAS Quality, Safety & Improvement SharePoint site. All updates and information being shared will be available through our new share-point site following World Patient Safety Day 2025.

Please get involved! Whether you’re a parent, carer, educator, or community member—your support matters. Let’s work together to raise awareness, prevent harm, and build a culture of safety for every newborn and every child.
