NIAS celebrates National Volunteers’ Week

4th June 2026

During National Volunteers’ Week, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service would like to extend its sincere thanks to all of our volunteers whose dedication, compassion and commitment make a lasting difference in communities across Northern Ireland. This week provides an opportunity to recognise the contribution of our Community First Responders and Volunteer Car Drivers, whose selfless service supports patients and communities every day.

Our Community First Responders are local volunteers who live and work within the communities they serve. Trained to respond to a range of medical emergencies, they are often first on the scene, providing vital care and reassurance in the crucial moments before an ambulance crew arrives. From responding to cardiac arrests and other time-critical incidents to offering comfort and support in difficult situations, they play an essential role in improving outcomes for patients. Their willingness to step forward and help others reflects the very best of community spirit.

Behind every Community First Responder is a volunteer who gives something incredibly valuable – their time. Whether responding to emergencies, supporting local events, or promoting lifesaving skills within their communities, their contribution has a real and lasting impact. Across Northern Ireland, 458 Community First Responders work across 25 schemes, contributing thousands of volunteer hours each year to help save lives and support the work of the ambulance service. Their professionalism and compassion makes a meaningful difference every day.

This week also provides an opportunity to recognise the invaluable contribution of our Volunteer Car Drivers. Through their dedication and selflessness, they help ensure that patients across Northern Ireland can access the care they need safely, comfortably and with dignity. Their commitment supports some of the most vulnerable members of our communities and offers reassurance to patients and families alike. To every Community First Responder and Volunteer Car Driver, thank you for your generosity, commitment and compassion.
