Congratulations to Mark Cochrane on being recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours List. Mark has given over 35 years of distinguished service to the statutory Ambulance Service, commencing his career in November 1988 within ambulance control. From an early stage, his professionalism and commitment marked him as an individual of exceptional potential, which he has consistently fulfilled throughout a career defined by operational excellence, leadership and public service.
Qualifying as a paramedic in 1993, he served extensively on frontline emergency ambulances, demonstrating exceptional clinical skill, composure and courage. He has been at the forefront of major and complex incidents, including terrorist-related events, the Co-operation Ireland Maracycle tragedy, and numerous multi-agency responses. In these high-pressure environments, he has consistently displayed calm, decisive leadership and an unwavering focus on patient care, earning formal commendations and the enduring respect of colleagues.
Progressing into leadership roles, Mark has made a significant and lasting contribution to staff safety and operational practice. Through his leadership of the NIAS Violence and Aggression Group, he championed the introduction of body-worn video, strengthening staff protection, accountability and organisational culture across the Trust.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he provided compassionate and effective divisional leadership, maintaining service continuity while supporting staff through unprecedented demand. His visible, steady leadership contributed significantly to workforce resilience during this period.
He has held senior leadership roles across both Southern and Belfast Divisions and now serves as Assistant Director of Operations.
As a Trust Strategic Commander, he has led responses to major incidents, including the November 2024 Red Weather Warning and sustained industrial action, ensuring the continued delivery of critical services under significant pressure.
Mark’s career reflects sustained excellence, leadership under pressure, and a commitment to improving services for patients and staff. His contribution has had a lasting impact on operational delivery, staff safety and organisational resilience within the Ambulance Service.
Outside of his professional role, Mark is a devoted husband to Linda and a proud father to Alice, who has followed him into the paramedic profession, reflecting the values of commitment, professionalism and public service that he has exemplified throughout his career.
