Health Minister Mike Nesbitt has officially launched 23 new Accident and Emergency ambulances as part of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service’s planned replacement of 59 operational vehicles.
The programme also includes 22 replacement Patient Transport Service vehicles and 14 replacement Rapid Response Vehicles. The investment forms part of NIAS’s ongoing approach to maintaining a modern, safe and fit-for-purpose fleet. It will replace older, heavily utilised vehicles, some of which have accumulated significant mileage through intensive operational use.
The new vehicles will improve fleet reliability and availability, reduce the maintenance pressures associated with an ageing fleet, strengthen operational resilience and provide a modern working environment for frontline staff.
The replacement programme also supports NIAS’s longer-term ambition to develop a more sustainable and future-ready fleet. Fleet modernisation, improved vehicle specifications and the progressive adoption of lower-emission technologies will help NIAS reduce its environmental impact while continuing to meet the clinical, safety and operational requirements of a regional ambulance service.

This is a renewal of our existing fleet and does not represent an increase in the overall number of operational vehicles.
