“When I started with the NI Ambulance Service 20 years ago, there weren’t many female Paramedics in the service. I am delighted to say that that has changed greatly and to any woman thinking of joining the Paramedic profession I’d say definitely go for it.
I started my career on a double crewed ambulance in Dungannon, and then moved on to work on my own as a Rapid Response Paramedic in Belfast. I am now a Community Resuscitation Officer with NIAS, providing training and support to Community First Responder volunteers, teachers and community organisations, amongst other resuscitation related duties. I am also very proud to be the Northern Ireland Representative for the College of Paramedics.
On International Women’s Day I’d like to share something my wee granny Bridie taught me when I became a Paramedic – ‘People will never remember the treatment you gave them, but they’ll remember how you treated them.’ She herself was a phenomenal woman and a great advocate for helping others. I believe women should always help other women, celebrate their achievements and we should all advocate for gender equality and the rights of women and girls.”
